Additional Taxpayer Assistance Programs

The Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program is a loan provided by the State of Illinois for qualified senior citizens.

The program will loan up to $7,500.00 for property taxes, with a 3% interest rate on an annual basis. A lien is placed on the property and the loan does not become due until death or the property is sold.

To qualify for the tax deferral, you must:

  • Be 65 years of age or older.
  • Have a total household income that meets the current income limits set by the program, which are updated annually.
  • Have equity in the property.
  • Have no unpaid property taxes or foreclosures on the property.
  • Have homeowner's insurance with coverage against fire and casualty.
  • The program is available for owner occupied, primary residences only.

Applications will be available at treasurer.mchenrycountyil.gov starting Jan. 1, and must be received by March 1; there will be no extensions. For questions, please visit the Treasurer’s website HERE  or contact them at 815-334-4260 or email: treasurer@mchenrycountyil.gov.

In addition, the Treasurer’s office encourages seniors to make sure they are taking advantage of the multiple exemption options that are available to ease their property-tax burden. To learn more about these exemptions, contact the McHenry County Assessments Office at 815-334-4290 or email assessments@mchenrycountyil.gov.
